What does each swim analysis tool actually do?

These tools split into four families: video analysis apps that look at your stroke, wearables that measure your body and your laps, desktop software for people who want to measure everything themselves, and in-person services where a human does the looking. Nobody covers all four. Here is each one, straight.

SwimLytic

Mine, so judge accordingly. You film a lap with a regular phone, and the app maps 33 body landmarks frame by frame and scores 8 technique metrics: entry, catch, pull, recovery, rotation, kick, head position and breathing. Analysis runs entirely on the device, so the video is never uploaded. It is free while in beta. The honest limits: freestyle is the calibrated stroke today, it gives you nothing in real time while you swim, and it does not count laps or track volume. It scores technique after the fact, which is the thing I could not find anywhere when I retired.

FORM Smart Swim 2 goggles

The tool I would point you to if real-time feedback matters most. FORM's goggles put pace, distance, intervals and heart rate in a heads-up display inside the goggle while you swim, something no video-based app can do. The Premium subscription adds HeadCoach, which FORM describes as real-time coaching on fundamental skills. Goggles run $149 to $259, and Premium is $15 a month or $119 a year. What it does not do is look at your body from the outside: no camera means no joint angles, no catch depth, no head position measured from actual footage.

MySwimPro

MySwimPro is the strongest training-plan app in swimming, with AI workouts, a big technique video library and analytics like SWOLF and lap splits, at $19 a month or $99 a year. Be clear about what it is: a planning and tracking app with instructional videos, not a tool that watches your stroke and measures it. If your problem is structure and motivation, start here. If your problem is that your catch collapses at rep six, a plan will not show you that.

OnForm

OnForm is video review done properly: HD capture, slow motion, frame-by-frame stepping, drawing tools, voice-over feedback and side-by-side comparison. It is built around a coach sending annotated clips to athletes, and it is very good at that. Athlete plans start at $9.99 a month and coach plans at $19.99, with a 14-day free trial. The catch: the app gives you the microscope, but someone still has to know what they are looking at. Without a coach on the other end, you are drawing your own conclusions.

Dartfish

Dartfish is the professional tier: a Swiss video analysis platform used by federations and performance institutions, with angle measurement, overlays, tagging and reporting. I saw tools like this in the hands of biomechanists during my career, and they are excellent when a trained analyst drives them. The mobile plan starts around 7 euros a month billed annually, with professional tiers reaching 180 euros a month. For an individual swimmer it is more instrument than answer.

Kinovea

Kinovea is completely free and open source: a Windows desktop program for slowing video down, syncing two clips side by side, and manually measuring angles, distances and times. No subscriptions, no limits, fully local. If you enjoy doing the analysis yourself and want exact numbers you measured with your own hands, this is the best value in this entire list. The cost is your time: every measurement is manual, and the software will not tell you what any number means for your stroke.

Apple Watch

If you already own one, the pool swim workout automatically tracks your sets and rests, detects stroke types, and records distance and pace, with SWOLF as an efficiency proxy. It is genuinely good volume tracking with zero extra cost. But stroke count and SWOLF are motion-sensor guesses about efficiency, not measurements of technique, and most detail only appears on your iPhone after the workout.

TritonWear

TritonWear pairs a wearable with a team platform and tracks over 30 metrics per lap: stroke rate, distance per stroke, underwater speed, push-off force, plus training load and readiness. It is aimed at clubs and college programs, with testimonials from the likes of Swimming Australia, and pricing is quoted per team through a demo. For a squad it is a serious option. For one self-coached swimmer it is probably more platform than you need.

In-person video analysis

Facilities like SwimLabs put you in a warm pool with instant video replay, in-pool mirrors and an instructor watching every stroke. A good human coach correcting you in the water, in the moment, is still the gold standard, and no app fully replaces it. The trade-offs are cost, scheduling and geography: you get expert eyes for an hour, then you are back on your own until the next session. Pricing varies by location and is generally not published.

What is the best free swim technique analysis tool?

Two honest answers. Kinovea is permanently free and open source, and it is the right pick if you want to measure your own video manually on a computer. SwimLytic is free while in beta, and it is the right pick if you want the measuring done for you, on your phone, with a score attached. Paid plans will come to SwimLytic later, and beta testers will be told before anything changes.

Can Apple Watch analyze my swim technique?

No, not in the way a camera can. Apple Watch detects which stroke you swam, counts laps, and estimates efficiency through SWOLF, which blends stroke count and time. That tells you whether your swimming is getting more efficient, but not why. It cannot see a dropped elbow, a flat rotation or a lifted head, because it only feels your wrist moving.

Do I need a coach to benefit from video analysis?

No, but the tools split along exactly that line. OnForm and Dartfish are built around a coach or analyst reading the footage for you. Kinovea hands you the ruler and lets you do the reading. SwimLytic automates the reading: it measures your stroke and writes the interpretation, which is precisely the part I spent sixteen years getting from coaches and biomechanists that most swimmers never get access to.

Which tool gives feedback while I am actually swimming?

Only the wearables. FORM goggles show live metrics in the display mid-swim, and that is a real advantage no video app matches, mine included. Video analysis, whether SwimLytic, OnForm or a biomechanist with Dartfish, always happens after the swim. My take after a career of both: live numbers change your effort in the moment, and post-swim analysis changes your stroke over weeks. They solve different problems, and plenty of swimmers use one of each.
